Green Ethics

Updated April 2009

Croissant Neuf Summer Party is very proud of being one of the greenest events in the U.K.

Croissant Neuf have always championed renewable energy and sustainability. Our life styles and our events reflect our beliefs that it’s easy to live a low impact life style and still have the maximum amount of fun!

All of the electricity on site is generated by solar panels and wind generators, from the P.As to the toilet lighting and lights above each gate and fire point. Everything that possibly can be, is recycled. All the food and drink on site is organic, as local as possible and fairly traded where appropriate. We will have experts on site giving talks and running displays on renewable energy and sustainability and the U.Ks largest supplier of solar panels will be on site.

Some Croissant Neuf Energy Facts

  • By using solar power instead of diesel generators on site to power the stages and lights we are saving over 1.5 tonnes of CO2
  • The LED lighting system in the Big Top uses less power than an average house hold TV
  • The P.A system in the big top uses less power than a hair dryer but still has a sound output equivalent to a 10KW P.A.
  • All caterers on site use renewable energy.
  • The bar use hand pumps and all their lighting is LED

Three Trees per Car

To ensure the least possible impact on the environment from the event, this year for every car that travels to the site we will be planting 3 Trees on and around the site. This will create habitat for wildlife and help soak up CO2 emissions.

Other measures that PartySun Ltd and affiliated groups will undertake in order to minimise the environmental impacts of the Croissant Neuf Summer Party 2009:

Office Management / Administration

  • Use of recycled paper / recycle used paper / re-use envelopes
  • Shut down electrical equipment when not in use. Do not use stand-by function.
  • Use of email rather than post where appropriate – e.g. use of e-tickets for public.
  • Recycle office equipment – ink cartridges, pens, and computers.
  • Travel to work using public transport, on foot, lift share or bicycle.

Carbon Reduction: On-Site Power and Travel

Ongoing carbon analysis – update 2008 analysis and make improvements in 2009 to maximise reductions.

Promote alternative methods of getting to the event:

  • Lift share facility on website (freewheelers)
  • Increase car-parking charges
  • Investigating with a view to offering subsidised shuttle bus to local public transport hubs (Newport train and bus stations)
  • Local taxi firms listed on website

Contractors:

  • Use local contractors where possible and appropriate to reduce travel distances
  • Encourage use of local wholesalers for caterers and traders
  • Use more ethically sound contractors where possible

Power Generation:

  • Maintain 100% renewable energy on main events field
  • Use of solar and wind power
  • Use solar showers / compost toilets as available / affordable

Waste Management

Work in collaboration with Monmouthshire Community Waste Management and force percentages of recycled materials up year-on-year;

  • Increase amount of recycling points around site
  • Insist upon biodegradable or re-useable serveware in all trader contracts
  • Introduce full composting scheme (local wormery and composting organisation)
  • Introduction of biodegradable beer glasses
  • More substantial waste management team on site to sort and collect rubbish
  • Recycling bin bags given to each member of the public upon arrival
  • Thorough policing of all the above during and after the event

Toxicity / Pollution of Land

  • Stipulate use of only eco-friendly cleaning products in showers (e.g. ecover)
  • Waste water IBCs for all bars/caterers
  • Non-toxic flush liquids in toilets
  • All metals and wastes removed from fire pit

Supply Lines (local economy / ethical sourcing / travel miles)

  • Organic traders prioritised
  • Local firms where possible
  • Fair Trade teas and coffee
  • Ethical meat policy, local, organic etc…
  • FSC wood products only in construction
  • Ethically sourced bottled water (FRANK or Belu)
  • Priority given to small and ethically sound firms and organisations

Environmental Awareness

  • Promote green initiatives and steps we are taking to maximise our green credentials on website and in printed programme
  • Enter Greener Festival Award 2009
  • Invite leaders in sustainability, renewable energy and conservation to event to do talks and run workshops
  • Stalls promoting and selling renewable energy equipment on site
  • Focus in media pack on our environmental policy and the overall “green” aspect of the event
